QUALITY OF SPORTSMITH™ RUNNING BELTS
There is one component of every treadmill that is considered the most important for its smooth operation. That is the running belt. It sees the most wear and tear of any component by far, and needs to be tough and sturdy to resist all the rough treatment it receives. Belts come in all sizes, just like treadmills do, but the one thing you universally want is a high quality belt. Anything else is inefficient and could potentially damage your expensive treadmill!
SPORTSMITH™ GoPro belts are tough, period. They are tested for over 12,000 hours of use and upwards of 30,000 miles of walking. That is the equivalent of walking across China almost 10 times! SPORTSMITH™ GoPro belts feature a carbon fiber underside. This reduces static build up (a major problem with treadmills), and ensures less friction resulting in smoother operation. This will save you hundreds of dollars in costly repairs, and who doesn’t like to save money?
They are manufactured with high quality Class 10 materials or higher, which greatly increase the belt’s overall strength, tractability, and durability. This has the effect of reducing stress and strain on the other components of your treadmill, increasing its overall lifespan as well. With many of today’s products designed with built-in obsolescence, it can be nice to know that some things are still built with quality and longevity in mind. Our belts also come with a 120-day warranty. Who else can offer that?
Here’s a quick comparison of belts currently available.
Attribute | SPORTSMITH™ GoPro Belts | Other Belts |
Anti-Static metallized fiber finish | YES | Questionable |
Seam splice at 100 PSI (the industry’s strongest seam) | YES | NO |
Unique multi-filament thread designed for superior strength | YES | Questionable |
Material class used in manufacture | Class 10 Materials | Class 5 Materials |
Material consistency for reduced motor amp draw, roller shaft load, noise level, and roller bearing stress | YES | Questionable |
Overall lower maintenance costs | YES | NO |
As you can see, SPORTSMITH™ GoPro belts are some of the highest quality available in the market today. Here is what one of our long time customers had to say:
“Your belts were half the price of the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) belts, so I gave them a try. Yours were a lot better! The belt seam is of far greater quality than the original OEM belt. I have ordered parts for other units and found the same high quality of work in all of your parts. SPORTSMITH™ should have a slogan like ‘Double the quality at half the price’ or something similar. I thank you for the quality of your treadmill belts and better yet the low price.”
Reginald L. Jones, CBET – Marshall Medical Center, North Guntersville, Alabama
The bottom line is that SPORTSMITH™ GoPro treadmill running belts are simply better made than almost anything else. They save you money, time, and trouble when it comes to repairs and replacement parts. In today’s world, everyone could stand to have more money, more time, and less headache!
Electronic Troubleshooting for a Stairmaster Stepper
No Power on SC916 Stepper
About This Video
This video covers a No Power situation on the Stairmaster SC916 Stepper. The nature of the Stairmaster SC916 Stepper is to power up when you step onto the pedals. A No Power situation, as the video shows, results in no response from the console and the pedals falling to the floor. This unit is battery powered, so the battery voltage is the first thing to inspect. The battery should read 6.1 VDC or greater. The battery can be recharged if the reading is less than 6 VDC but greater than 4.8 VDC. It should be connected to the battery charger for 24 hours and then disconnected. If the battery reads less than 4.8 VDC, the battery is no longer good and should be replaced.
If the battery voltage is good, the next item to inspect is the speed sensor. The gap of the speed sensor and its target disc should be close to a credit cards thickness. Adjust the gap if necessary. Inspect the connection of the speed sensor to the lower control board. Reset connection if necessary. See our video on Speed Sensor Testing and Adjustment for further troubleshooting of the speed sensor.
The lower control board could be at fault if everything up to this point has checked out good. It is recommended to swap the suspect lower control board with a known good board. Replace the lower control board if necessary.
Ensure all connections to the lower control board are secure. A loose cable or wire connection can often be the cause for the No Power situation. As the video shows, that is the case in this example.
A last note, you can remove the console and disconnect the 20 pin cable from the display. Measuring for DC voltage from the black and white wires, you should get the same reading as from your battery. If the voltage verifies but the console still does not power up, then the console should be replaced.

SPORTSMITH IS A GOOGLE FAVORITE!
Sportsmith LLC has been recognized as a Google Favorite Place. This is a very exclusive title, given to only 1% of all businesses in the United States. Essentially, a Favorite Place is any business that has been found online by Google and clicked on, then ended up in the top percentile of all businesses found by Google. Pretty impressive considering the number of businesses out there!
As part of this promotion, Google has issued each business that qualifies with a “QR Code” decal. This is a special barcode that can be scanned with any smart phone camera (via a downloadable application) that will function as a sort of “marker” on Google Maps. Scanning the code will bring up specific information about that business, and allow access to user reviews, any coupons that have been released, or allow the user to add the business as a personal favorite.
Sportsmith is proud to not only be recognized by this unique honor, but to also participate in Google’s initiative to put America’s business “on the map”. We would like to extend our thanks not only to Google, but particularly our customers, without whom accolades like this would not have been possible.

Why Staying Hydrated is Important
If you were told that the key to health and wellness lies in a tall glass of tap water, you probably wouldn’t believe it. Yet there’s perhaps more truth to this statement than meets the eye.
For instance, when you’re feeling irritable, drowsy or unable to concentrate, there’s a strong probability that your body is telling you its thirsty. Other early signs and symptoms of mild dehydration, explains Lisa De Fazio MS, RD, include headaches, reduced muscle performance, muscle cramps and dry eyes.
For competitive or recreational athletes, a mere two percent dehydration level can reduce performance by as much as 10 percent, states Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, a sports dietitian in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and member of the Dallas Dietetic Media Bureau. Clearly the importance of hydration is nothing to balk at.
So what can you do to prevent dehydration, and how much water should you consume daily? Let’s take a closer look.
What is dehydration?
A whopping 60 percent of your overall body weight is water, and several organs and muscles contain as much as 80 percent. Dehydration occurs when the body lacks the proper amount of water necessary to perform physically, physiologically and mentally. Mild dehydration occurs when you lose just one liter of water. If you experience an increased heart rate, changes in blood pressure or thicker blood, you could be showing signs of moderate to more severe dehydration.
Several biochemical and physiological cellular reactions require both water and electrolytes, like chloride, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium in balance. Electrolytes make you feel thirsty which, in turn, promotes fluid intake and hydration. Carbohydrate metabolism keeps us active and productive. Without the proper balance, you will feel unusually sluggish and lethargic.
A healthy, adequately hydrated individual should have clear or pale urine, but an obvious sign of dehydration is urine closer in color to apple juice or oil. Dehydration is more common during hot summer months, in the morning immediately after waking, during tournaments, two-a-day training sessions or following lengthy periods of exercise.
How much water do you need?
Actual quantity of daily water intake varies for each individual based on age, weight, weather and attire, illness, and both the duration and intensity of exercise. However, generally speaking, Ms. De Fazio recommends eight to nine glasses of water per day on average to replace fluid expenditure from kidney filtration, respiration and perspiration.
If you consume milk or alcoholic, caffeinated or carbonated beverages, which are dehydrating, your body’s water requirement will increase. The same holds true during episodes of consistent exercise, during which you should consume 5 to 10 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes.
What’s the best way to hydrate?
Hydration comes in several forms, but plain water is, without a doubt, the best and most cost-effective option. One downside to water, however, is that it lacks the carbohydrates you need for energy and glucose replacement. Water also lacks the proper balance of electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, required during intense exercise sessions, Ms. De Fazio explains. Carbohydrate and electrolyte replacement is critical for athletes because they are naturally more prone to heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or vomiting.
Soup, tea, smoothies, vegetables, juices, jell-o, decaffeinated coffee, fruit and low-calorie beverages like crystal light drink mixes also provide an excellent means for re-hydration, some of which also include electrolytes and carbohydrates, to help you prevent health consequences. Popular sports drinks like Gatorade, Propel, Powerade and Vitamin Water replenish the body during moderate to intense periods of physical exercise, boosting energy and performance. Just remember a sports drink is designed for sport, not for sitting behind a desk or math class, explains Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD. Then you should rely on water.
Steer clear of juices and soft drinks containing excessive amounts of sugar especially during physical activity or exertion as they can upset your stomach. Gatorade brand sports drinks contain measured sugars and carbohydrates ideally balanced to absorb quickly, replace lost glucose, boost athletic energy and ensure proper hydration even during peak temperatures. If you would rather eat your electrolytes as opposed to drinking a high-calorie sports drink, consider the following food sources paired with a tall glass of water:
Sodium Food Sources: baked chips, pretzels, crackers, soups, beef or turkey jerky
Potassium Food Sources: bananas, avocadoes, strawberries and potatoes
While water may not be the sole key to health and wellness, hydration is an essential element to feeling your best and performing at your peak.
HOW YOGA CAN HELP YOU RETAIN MEMBERS
In today’s tight economy, even the large “too big to fail” businesses need to find new and innovative ways to get new customers and maintain the customers they already have. Gyms and are no exception. In fact, with the rise in popularity of home exercise DVDs and home workout systems, gyms have to try harder than ever to maintain their customer base.
Yoga isn’t one of those “flash in the pan” exercise programs that you hear about today and is gone in a month’s time. It’s an ancient system, over 5000 years old. Its original purpose was religious enlightenment, but today’s modern Yoga is primarily an exercise regimen. Yoga has retained its popularity through many of the new “revolutionary” exercise programs and devices. Remember the Thigh Master? Tae-Bo? The list goes on and on. Every year new regimens and equipment come out touting to be the next big thing that will reduce the time and effort of exercise while seemingly costing more and more. The beauty of Yoga is that it’s inexpensive in terms of equipment needed, and is a proven exercise method. Those things combined make it a great way to stay fit in a down economy.
One of the main positive aspects of Yoga that you can impress upon your members is its inexpensiveness. All a practitioner really needs is a Yoga mat and some appropriate clothing. Of course there are all kinds of equipment available, and any place that includes Yoga courses in its regimens should make this sort of equipment available for its members. This can either be “communal” equipment that any member can use, or you can offer certain pieces of equipment for sale as well. One popular method is to offer mats for members for free while other equipment, such as blocks and rollers, are for sale. This offers the basic equipment needed so new members aren’t intimidated, while offering other options to your existing members. Of course, after a while almost all of your members, whether old or new, will want their own Yoga mat, so you should make these available for sale as well.
Press upon your members the effectiveness of Yoga. Its low-impact style means that someone averse to exercises like jogging and weight-lifting can get a full workout without the muscle and joint strain common in many exercise regimens. Almost anyone can perform Yoga, even overweight or injured members. Perhaps put together a video montage of various athletes who incorporate Yoga into their own daily exercise (gymnasts and swimmers are particularly fond of Yoga). Of course, a good instructor is essential here, but due to Yoga’s current popularity, instructors should not be difficult to find.
Yoga’s current popularity among athletes and celebrities is also a great selling point. While you should avoid highlighting so-called “fad” exercise regimens, don’t undersell Yoga’s current popularity. Many members will always be looking for what is “in” as far as exercise is concerned, and Yoga is most definitely “in”.
Most any health club these days includes Yoga in their lineup. If yours doesn’t, perhaps it’s time to start! Everyone likes variety and options, and perhaps some of those members of your establishment would like to try something other than Pilates or Zumba. If that’s the case, Yoga’s slow pace and different mindset might make the perfect alternative.
Electrical Troubleshooting for Stairmaster
Stairmaster 4600, 4400, & 4000PT Stairclimbers, among the most popular exercise machines sold on the market today, have three electrical components that are responsible for most troubleshooting calls. The Alternator, Diode, and the resistor are the heart and soul of the Stairmaster 4600/4400PT Stairclimber and often cause resistance levels to drop creating performance problems.
Tools Needed:
7/16”, 3/8”, & 1/4” nut drivers. 4” piece of wire with alligator clips attached to each end, and a multi-meter,
Symptom:
The Stairmaster loses all resistance when you step onto the pedals.
Alternator Test:
First, remove the machine from its power source. Then remove the side panels so you have a clear view of the alternator. On the back of the alternator, remove the black wire from the terminal B+ (marked POS). Remove the brown wire from the field terminal. You will need a length of wire 4” long with alligator clips attached to each end of the wire. Attach the wire to the B+ (POS) terminal and the field terminal, step on the machine for 10-15 seconds; if full resistance is present, the alternator has correct current flow. If no resistance is present, the next item to check is the alternator brushes. The brown square plate with two machine screws is the cover to the brushes. Remove the two machine screws with a ¼” nut driver and remove the alternator brushes. There should be ¼” or more of brush, any less and the alternator brushes should be replaced first. If the proper amount of brush is available, replace the alternator.
Diode Test:
Remove the brown wire and diode from the field terminal of the alternator and set the multi-meter to the Ohms setting. Place one lead on each end of the diode, and then reverse the leads. A good diode will indicate a high reading in one direction and a lower reading in the opposite direction. Replace the diode if both readings are high or if both readings are low.
Resistor Test:
Remove one wire from the load resistor and place one lead from the multi-meter, one each threaded post on the resistor. If the multi-meter does not read 0.5 Ohms, replace the resistor. As with any maintenance, procedures always consult your owners’ manual or seek the advice of a qualified repair technician.

Elliptical Maintenance
Performing Regular Maintenance On Your Ellipticals Will Save You Time, Money, And Effort In The End
Performing regular maintenance on your ellipticals will save you time, money and effort in the end. Always, consult your owners manual for the brand of elliptical you maintain and follow all safety guidelines before performing any maintenance tasks.
Daily Maintenance:
Turn the elliptical off and unplug from the electrical source. Using a damp cloth wipe down the covers, handlebars, stair-arm wheels and stair-arm ramps. Wipe the electronic console with a damp cloth. Be careful not to use any cleaner that contains alcohol or other corrosive cleaning agents. Simple Green is the best; it will not corrode steel or aluminum parts. Look for debris collecting around the axel of the stair-arm wheels and remove. Inspect the power cord looking for nicks, cuts or flattened power cords. Replace the power cord immediately if any defects are found.
Inspect the elliptical ramp assemblies for signs of wear or cracking. Older Precor 544 elliptical models using the flatter rectangular ramps are more prone to cracking. The easiest way to inspect for cracks on the 544 models is taking the end caps off the ramps and shine a flashlight into the cavity. Light penetrating through the surface of the ramp is a crack. You should replace the ramps immediately. If the ramps show minor nicks and scrapes, you can use ramp sleeves to extend the life of the ramps. Words of caution do not use ramp sleeves if the ramps are cracked.
Weekly Maintenance:
Weekly maintenance is very simple. All you will need is a vacuum cleaner or mop, depending on what type of flooring is at your facility. Turn the elliptical on its side and either vacuum or mop the floor to get rid of the dust bunnies. When turning the elliptical on its side take care not to scratch or bend the handrails.
Quarterly Maintenance:
For quarterly maintenance, you will need bearing grease and a tool kit with the following list of tools:
- Allen Wrench Set
- Screwdriver Set
- US Metric Socket Set
- US Metric End Wrench
Check LED and keypad functions making sure the keys do not stick when pressed down. Inspect the key pad for holes or punctures and replace if necessary. Inspect the power cord looking for nicks, cuts or flattened cords. Replace power cords at the first sign of damage. Check the speed sensor function while operating the machine and looking to make sure the stride rate is displayed while the machine is operated. Clean and lubricate the lift motor drive screw with bearing grease. Remove the rear cover and inspect drive belts for wear and proper tension. Replace belts that show signs of fraying. If the drive belts feel loose, adjust to the proper tension.
Always consult the documentation that came with your equipment. These tips are general in nature and do not cover all brands of fitness equipment.
